Harrison County Visitors Center

The new Harrison County Discovery Center is housed in a former jail, but the vision for the experience was anything but confining. More than a museum, organizers wanted the Discovery Center to serve as an information hub that encouraged exploration of the county’s other experience destinations and natural wonders, such as 600 known caves. In short, the Discovery Center needed to be immersive, fun and engaging enough to attract visitors—so it could interest them in going elsewhere, too.

We worked with local historians and educators to sift through a treasure trove of local people, places and events, and then our design turned that rich content into a family-friendly, hands-on experience which entertains as it educates: Historical portraits “talk.” Visitors crawl through a “cave” to change galleries. An exciting multi-media 360-degree presentation plunks visitors down in the midst of Confederate John Hunt Morgan’s Civil War raid into southern Indiana. This was the first project on which we served as the architect of record, and our fabricators worked with local contractors to build an memorable experience.

The result? The Harrison County Discovery Center fires up interest and imagination in the county outside the building—while being an innovative destination in its own right.

“I’ve had a delightful time working Solid Light and have been impressed with their attention to detail, customer service and people skills.”
