Bourbon District

The vision of Louisville business and government leaders was to create a downtown Bourbon District, a visitor destination that would promote the city’s historic ties to America’s native spirit. The District would both celebrate Louisville’s bourbon past and help visitors find the bourbon attractions of today.

We designed, created and installed an imaginative multi-layered experience with distinctive branding. A Street Hub in the heart of the Bourbon District is marked by a giant public artwork—“the Barrel,” comprised of tall concrete hoops resembling charred oak staves, painstakingly hand-crafted by our fabrication shop. Already, “the Barrel” has become a popular selfie spot, with visitors and locals snapping and posting photos of themselves inside the structure.

Signage with eye-catching imagery and carefully researched content identifies bourbon experience destinations and historic industry sites and provides wayfinding on a walking trail of the District. Finally, a colorful pop-up eventscape with distinctive half-barrel seating provides a movable gathering space for events.

“We found an important partner in Solid Light; they share our passion for this project. It’s evident in the approach, design and development of ‘The Barrel’ and the Bourbon District.”
